The newly elected Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja chapter, Dr. Samaila Timothy, has pledged to place the welfare of members at the forefront of his administration while promoting transparency, accountability, and excellence in healthcare delivery.
Speaking via a statement made available to journalists on Sunday in Taraba state after his election, Dr. Timothy said his leadership would be guided by openness and inclusiveness, with a commitment to protecting the interests of consultants and strengthening the association.
“The welfare of our members will be at the forefront of my administration. We are committed to an open and transparent leadership that protects the interests of consultants and promotes excellence in healthcare delivery,” he said.
He appealed to members to support his administration, assuring them that he would remain accountable to the association.
“I urge members of this association to give me their maximum support so that together we can take MDCAN to greater heights. I will work on the strength of the mandate you have given me and remain accountable to the members,” he added.
Acknowledging the enormous responsibility of his new office, Dr. Timothy sought the continued guidance and support of his predecessor, Dr. Abdullahi Nasiru.
“The shoes I am stepping into are bigger than me. I will need your collaboration and experience to succeed,” he said.
Dr. Timothy also expressed appreciation to the Medical Director of FMC Abuja, Prof. Aliyu Ahmed Sa’ad, who was represented at the event by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Muftau Bioku, for maintaining an open-door policy and providing a level playing field for the association within the institution.
Supporting the position of Dr. Timothy, the immediate past Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Nasiru, a Consultant Microbiologist at FMC Abuja, expressed confidence in Dr. Timothy’s ability to consolidate on the achievements of the outgoing administration.
“I have every confidence in Dr. Samaila Timothy. I believe he will consolidate on the progress we have made and take the association to even greater heights,” Nasiru said.
Dr. Timothy’s election has been widely celebrated as a significant achievement for Taraba State and the North-East, reflecting his professional excellence, dedication, and years of distinguished service within Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Before his election, he served the association in several leadership capacities, including vice chairman, secretary, and chairman and member of various committees. Professionally, he is the pioneer Head of the Neurosurgery Unit at FMC Abuja and has also served as Head of the Surgical Emergency Unit and Acting Head of the Department of Emergency Medicine.
The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) is the umbrella body for medical and dental consultants in Nigeria’s health institutions.
The association advocates improved welfare for specialist doctors, promotes professional standards, and supports policies aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery across the country.
