From the laboratory benches of Edo State to international professional engagement shaping public health responses, Sadoh Rosemary Odion has steadily carved a name for herself as a brilliant biomedical scientist whose career trajectory reflects discipline, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare.

Her journey began at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, where she graduated with a First Class degree in Medical Laboratory Science, a milestone that laid the foundation for a career driven by both academic excellence and practical impact. Reflecting on her early years, she noted, “My training exposed me to the rigour of scientific practice and gave me the confidence to pursue solutions to real health challenges.”

Following her undergraduate studies, Rosemary transitioned into hands-on laboratory work, taking up roles that strengthened her technical expertise in diagnostics, microbiology, and molecular biology. After graduation, she worked across laboratories in Delta State, gaining experience in microscopy, culture techniques, and disease diagnostics.

In 2020, Rosemary began her mandatory one-year internship at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria. In this role, she honed her skills in the laboratory diagnosis of human diseases, improving patient care and diagnostic accuracy. Notably, she distinguished herself tremendously during her internship and received strong recommendations from management for the National Youth Service Corps program, an opportunity that further sharpened her expertise in molecular diagnostics.

Later in 2021, her national service year marked a turning point as she joined the Molecular Laboratory at the Centre for Disease Control and Research. As a molecular scientist, she contributed to COVID-19 testing and analysis and supported diagnostics for a wide range of infectious diseases. Reflecting on this experience, she said, “Being part of the COVID-19 response team taught me the importance of precision, teamwork, and resilience in times of crisis.”

Rising through the ranks, Rosemary later assumed the role of Biomedical Scientist and eventually Senior Biomedical Scientist at the same center, where she now leads advanced molecular diagnostic processes including qPCR techniques. Her work includes DNA and RNA extraction, PCR analysis, and viral load monitoring for diseases such as hepatitis and COVID-19. She also performs molecular detection of Human Papilloma Virus, GeneXpert HIV and Tuberculosis diagnosis, Monkeypox testing, and routine laboratory investigations.

In addition to her professional work, Rosemary is also a researcher who contributes to advancing scientific knowledge, although her detailed scientific contributions are presented separately.

Her career is further distinguished by a series of prestigious awards and honours. Notably, she received the U.S. Department of State EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Scholarship, a recognition that supports outstanding scholars with global potential. She remarked, “That award reaffirmed my belief that hard work truly opens doors beyond borders.”

Earlier on, she was a recipient of the Michael Taiwo Scholarship in the United States and was also recognized as an Outstanding Participant at the EducationUSA Summer Graduate Bootcamp. These achievements highlight her academic strength and readiness for global engagement.

Her excellence dates back to her early career, having earned the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria Award of Excellence in 2019. According to her, “Those early recognitions pushed me to aim higher and stay consistent in my goals.”

Beyond the laboratory, Rosemary is deeply invested in mentorship. She trains students in proposal writing and laboratory techniques, guiding the next generation of scientists. She stated, “I believe knowledge grows when it is shared, and mentoring is my way of giving back.”

Her commitment to community service is equally notable. Through her involvement with the Rotary Club and public health initiatives, she has led awareness campaigns on cervical cancer, safe blood donation, and adolescent health. She emphasized, “Science should not stay in the lab alone, it must reach the people.”

With a career that blends scientific expertise, professional growth, and meaningful community engagement, Rosemary continues to stand out as a dynamic force in biomedical science. She noted that one of her most engaging community outreach efforts was her participation in HPV and Hepatitis sensitization and diagnostic testing. As she looks to the future, she remains focused on expanding her global impact, stating, “I am committed to using science as a tool to improve lives and strengthen health systems, not just in Nigeria, but worldwide.”
