Veteran environmental journalist, author and lecturer, Tunde Akingbade, has died at the age of 67.Akingbade passed away on Monday, July 27. 
  
Born on March 4, 1959, he devoted more than four decades to environmental journalism, establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s pioneering voices on climate change, pollution, conservation and sustainable development.
  
He began his journalism career in 1984 and worked with several media organisations, including The Guardian, The Guardian on Sunday, African Concord, Sketch Press and African Science Monitor, before becoming a freelance environmental correspondent.
  
His outstanding contributions to environmental reporting earned him international recognition, including the highly commended Environmental Journalist Award at the 2012 CNN/MultiChoice African Journalist Awards. 
 
He also founded and presented the Mr Environment programme on RayPower Radio, where he promoted environmental awareness and public education.
 
Akingbade was the author of Nigeria on the Trail of the Environment, a widely acclaimed book that chronicles Nigeria’s environmental history and policy.   
  
Beyond his writing, he mentored many young journalists through teaching, advocacy and professional guidance.
  
He reportedly fell ill in 2013 and had since been receiving care in Akure, Ondo State, with the support of his family and friends.
 
He is survived by his wife and two sons. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family at a later date.
  
Akingbade’s passing marks the end of a distinguished career dedicated to environmental advocacy, public enlightenment and the advancement of environmental journalism in Nigeria.
