***LP chair says 2027 must be a contest of ideas, not bitterness

***Hails former governor’s legacy of service

As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, has urged Nigeria’s political class to reject divisive politics and place the country’s unity and progress above personal and partisan interests.

Speaking on Friday during the 80th birthday celebration of former Plateau State Governor and elder statesman, Senator Jonah David Jang, in Jos, Usman said Nigeria could only advance if political leaders embraced patriotism, tolerance and issue-based campaigns.

She warned that elections should never become a platform for hatred, intimidation or the erosion of national unity, stressing that democracy flourishes when political competition is anchored on ideas, competence and character.

“The next election should not be a battle against fellow Nigerians. It should be a contest of ideas, competence and character. When elections are over, we must all return to the same Nigeria. That is why patriotism must always be greater than politics,” she said.

The Labour Party chairman maintained that Nigerians deserve leaders who unite rather than divide, inspire confidence instead of fear, and strengthen the country’s democratic institutions.

According to her, although political parties may pursue different ideologies and programmes, every political actor shares a collective responsibility to preserve Nigeria’s peace and cohesion.

She therefore urged politicians and their supporters to embrace civility, reject inflammatory rhetoric and conduct themselves in a manner that deepens democracy rather than fuels division.

“History does not remember those who shouted the loudest. It remembers those who built the strongest institutions, protected democracy and put their country first,” she added.

Reflecting on the life of the celebrant, Usman described Senator Jang as one of Nigeria’s distinguished statesmen whose decades of service in the military and public office exemplify discipline, patriotism and commitment to nation-building.

She said Jang’s contributions as a military officer, former governor of Plateau State and senator have earned him a lasting place in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“At 80, Senator Jonah Jang represents a generation of leaders whose lives remind us that public office is ultimately about service, honour and legacy. We celebrate not only his longevity but also his enduring contributions to nation-building,” she said.

Usman prayed for God’s continued grace, good health and strength upon the former governor, expressing hope that his wealth of experience would continue to inspire future generations of leaders.
