Celebrating 100 inspiring and award-winning amazons in Nigeria – Oladoyin Abiola Adewusi: A trailblazer redefining leadership in Nigeria’s energy sector

Oladoyin Abiola Adewusi is the Head of Bulk Trading & Product Sourcing at BOVAS & Company Limited

In the high-stakes, fast-paced world of downstream petroleum trading, few names command as much respect for strategic precision and resilient leadership as Oladoyin Abiola Adewusi. Recently recognised by The Guardian as one of the 100 Inspiring Amazons in Nigeria, Oladoyin’s journey is a masterclass in professional evolution, academic excellence, and the power of disciplined execution. As the Head of Bulk Trading & Product Sourcing at BOVAS & Company Limited, she stands at the forefront of an industry undergoing historic transformation, proving that excellence knows no gender.

A Journey Built on Continuous Evolution

Oladoyin’s rise to the pinnacle of energy trading was not an overnight success but a deliberate journey of learning and adaptation. With over 15 years of progressive experience spanning telecommunications, insurance, and assurance, she brought a diverse analytical toolkit to the BOVAS Group. Beginning her tenure in Internal Audit, she transitioned through Bulk Sales and Petroleum Equalisation Fund (PEF) operations, gaining the foundational commercial experience in pricing and market operations that would later define her leadership.

The true test of her agility came in 2023 with the removal of the fuel subsidy, a move that fundamentally altered the downstream industry. Recognising her unique blend of operational and analytical expertise, BOVAS invested in her transition to lead the Bulk Trading function during this volatile period. Reflecting on her path, Oladoyin notes that “every role prepared me for the next,” emphasising that organisational investment combined with an individual’s commitment to learning creates lasting value.

Leading Through the “DVUCA” Landscape

Today, Oladoyin navigates what she describes as a DVUCA environment—one defined by Disruption, Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. In a sector where forex fluctuations and supply chain shocks are the norm, her leadership has been characterised by data-driven decision-making and a proactive stance. Under her guidance, the Trade team at BOVAS has prioritised market intelligence and disciplined commercial planning over mere reaction. “Anticipating market movements is often more valuable than reacting to them,” Oladoyin explains. By monitoring regulatory developments and supply risks, she has not only optimised sourcing decisions but also protected market share and ensured reliable product availability across Nigeria. Her work directly impacts national energy security, ensuring that BOVAS remains a resilient and customer-focused pillar of the economy.

The energy and commodity trading space has traditionally been male-dominated, yet Adewusi has thrived by focusing on competence and vision rather than barriers. She credits much of her inspiration to the Group Managing Director of BOVAS, a woman who “broke the glass ceiling long before I entered the industry”. This environment of excellence has empowered Oladoyin to lead with confidence, proving that credibility in the boardroom is earned through integrity and results.

However, her vision extends beyond her own achievements. As an “Amazon,” she is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of female leaders in energy and logistics. She intentionally coaches younger colleagues, encouraging them to step into leadership roles and embrace the “courage to embrace new opportunities”. For Oladoyin, the ultimate legacy is not personal recognition but the “value you create, the lives you impact positively, and the opportunities you leave behind”.

A Standard of Academic and Professional Excellence

Oladoyin’s professional successes are anchored by an elite academic background. A First-Class Economics graduate from Lead City University, she also holds an MSc in Financial Risk Management from the University of Glasgow. Her commitment to staying ahead of global trends is further evidenced by her Diploma in Marketing, a CIM UK Certificate, and her current pursuit of an Executive MBA at Rome Business School Nigeria.

As she looks toward the next five years, her vision for BOVAS is clear: to build a more agile, data-driven, and strategically positioned operation that continues to deliver value to supply partners and customers alike.

Words of Wisdom for the Next Generation

To the young women aspiring to follow in her footsteps, Oladoyin offers a simple yet profound mantra: “Don’t pursue recognition, pursue excellence”. She encourages them to embrace unattractive assignments, as these often provide the experiences necessary for future greatness.

Oladoyin Adewusi said, the energy sector is beyond being a trader; it has a visionary leader who embodies the resilience and brilliance of a true Amazon. Through her work at BOVAS, she is not just fueling vehicles—she is fueling the future of Nigerian leadership.
