Air Canada has announced plans to begin scheduled flights to Lagos in 2027 following the expansion of the Air Transport Agreement between Canada and Nigeria.

The airline disclosed that it has commenced the process of securing the necessary regulatory approvals required to operate commercial flights into Nigeria, paving the way for what would become a direct air link between the two countries.

The development follows an announcement by the Canadian government expanding the bilateral air transport agreement with Nigeria, a move expected to strengthen trade, tourism and business ties while offering travellers more flight options.

Air Canada said details of the proposed Lagos service, including flight schedules and aircraft to be deployed, will be announced after the required approvals have been obtained.
Canadian officials described the expanded agreement as a major step towards improving connectivity between both countries, noting that Nigeria’s large economy and sizeable Nigerian-Canadian community make direct flights a strategic addition to Canada’s international aviation network.

If approved, the Lagos route will mark Air Canada’s entry into the Nigerian market and is expected to provide passengers with a direct travel option between Canada and Nigeria for the first time under the airline’s operations.
