A coalition of civil society organisations under the Osun Election Civil Society Observers’ Coordination Group, on Friday tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to monitor members of the National Union of Roads and Transport Workers (NURTW) in charge of logistics for electoral materials.

The CSOs gave the charge during a press conference addressed on its behalf by the National Secretary of Campaign for Democracy (CD), Olufemi Lawson, in Osogbo, Osun State capital.

Lawson, who expressed concern over reports regarding the identity and involvement of some individuals associated with NURTW in the electoral logistics chain, called for proper and adequate monitoring by INEC and security agencies.

He urged all transport personnel involved in the movement of election materials to remain professional and neutral, warning against any attempt to delay, divert, interfere with or compromise the movement of materials.

Lawson also called on “political parties, the media and accredited observers to monitor the movement of electoral materials and promptly report suspicious or irregular developments through appropriate channels.”

While commending INEC’s efforts in voter-related processes, stakeholder engagements, logistics and deployment preparations, he stressed that the commission must ensure that no avoidable logistical or technological challenge undermines the credibility of the election.

“The Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies must rise above partisan considerations and provide a level playing field for all political parties and candidates,” Lawson stated.
