Unicorn Sports Summer Camp moves to Ikorodu after successful Lekki edition

The 2026 Unicorn Sports Summer Camp is set to enter its second phase as the multi-sport development programme moves to Kingsfield College, Ikorodu, Lagos, from August 17 to 28.

The second phase will feature activities across football, basketball, track and field, providing young athletes with an expanded platform to develop their sporting abilities while enjoying a structured and engaging long-vacation programme.

Experienced Spanish football coach Gustavo Onaindia will once again headline the football programme as Head Instructor. Onaindia, a former Assistant Coach at Spanish club Celta Vigo, already took charge of the technical programme during the first phase of the camp, giving him first-hand experience of the organisation, coaching structure and overall standard of the Unicorn Sports Summer Camp.

Following his experience at the Lekki edition, Onaindia expressed a positive assessment of the quality and organisation of the programme, particularly the structure of the sessions, the enthusiasm of the young participants and the commitment of the organisers to providing a professional sporting environment.

His assessment also reinforces the organisers’ ambition to introduce international-standard coaching practices into grassroots sports development in Nigeria, while creating an environment where young athletes can learn, compete and develop both technically and personally.

The football programme produced several competitive encounters during the Lekki phase. Unicorn Sports Team secured a 2-0 victory over Pegasus FC in the U-17 category, while the U-14 fixture between the two teams ended in a 3-3 draw and the U-10 encounter finished goalless.

In other U-17 fixtures, Unicorn Sports Team suffered a 3-2 defeat to F8 Ballers Africa, with Jonathan and Ayodeji scoring for Unicorn, before narrowly losing 1-0 to Seamoriow. The results provided valuable competitive exposure for the young players as they went up against different opposition during the camp.

Unicorn Sports Team also faced the School Coaches Team in an entertaining high-scoring encounter, with the latter emerging 10-7 winners.

However, beyond the scorelines, the Lekki phase was designed around a broader developmental philosophy, combining structured coaching, competition and exposure with character development, teamwork, discipline and confidence-building.

Project Director and Coordinator, Joseph Aina, said the camp was conceived to provide children with an experience that extends beyond sporting instruction.

“We want the Unicorn Sports Summer Camp to be an environment where children can discover and develop their sporting abilities while also acquiring values that will serve them beyond the playing field. Through quality coaching, competition and interaction, we want them to build discipline, confidence, teamwork and leadership qualities. Our objective is to help them grow not only as athletes, but also as responsible and well-rounded young people.”

With the first phase successfully completed in Lekki, attention now turns to Ikorodu, where the organisers are expecting another strong participation from young athletes between August 17 and 28.

The inclusion of basketball, track and field alongside football in the second phase further reflects Unicorn Sports’ commitment to multi-sport development and its desire to provide children and teenagers with access to diverse sporting disciplines during the long vacation.

With Onaindia returning to lead the football programme after his first-hand experience of the Lekki edition, the Ikorodu phase is expected to build on the foundations established in the first phase while exposing participants to further technical instruction, competition and international coaching perspectives.

The Unicorn Sports Summer Camp 2026 is part of the organisation’s broader grassroots sports development initiative, aimed at providing young athletes with quality coaching, competitive opportunities and pathways for future sporting development.
