Lecturers at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) have said that they decided to call off their two-week strike action following deep commitments by the state government to address contending issues.

They stated that the state government had not only increased monthly subvention to the school but also commenced the implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement and other welfare agreements.

After their State Executive Council (SEC) meeting on Monday in Enugu, the lecturers suspended the strike as approved by the National Executive Council (NEC).

The suspension of the strike came exactly ten days after it was called on August 14. They had declared a two-week industrial action over the non-implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement and other welfare issues by the state government.

A statement signed by the Acting Chairman, ASUU/ESUT chapter, Dr Andrew Apeh, said that the suspension was in deference to the commitments secured and the pleading of the Governor, Peter Mbah.

“This suspension is therefore contingent on the good faith implementation of all items contained in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The union will remain vigilant and shall constitute a monitoring mechanism to ensure strict adherence to timelines and deliverables as agreed,” the statement added.

Apeh highlighted key issues of the MoU as implementation of the 2026 FGN/ASUU agreement in ESUT with phased roll-out commencing September 1, 2027, and concluding January 23, 2027.

Others are increased monthly subvention to ESUT by N115,000,000.00, raising the total to N276,000,000.00 to support salary and welfare obligations, as well as establishment of a joint implementation committee chapter by the Secretary to the State Government to oversee and perfect all components of the agreement.
