Dangote Transport has stepped up its road safety measures with the deployment of a real-time driver monitoring control room designed to track the activities of its truck drivers while on transit across Nigeria.

The facility, located at the company’s transport operational base in Ibese, Ogun state, was recently showcased to journalists during a guided tour of Dangote’s transport operations centre.

The initiative was part of the company’s wider strategy to leverage technology, driver training and operational controls to reduce road crashes, improve driving standards and protect both its employees and other road users.

Speaking during the tour, Head of Operations, Dangote Transport, Ibese, David Idiege, described the facility as one of the latest additions to the company’s safety architecture.

He said the facility enables transport control personnel to monitor drivers in real time, assess compliance with established safety standards and intervene promptly when potentially dangerous behaviour was detected.

According to him, the technology formed part of a holistic approach aimed at reducing accidents, improving operational efficiency and safeguarding drivers and other road users.

He said: “We are constantly looking for innovative ways to strengthen safety across our transport operations. The Driver Monitoring Control Room represents another significant milestone in our efforts to ensure that all journeys are conducted safely and responsibly.

“Safety remains our highest priority. We recognise the responsibility that comes with operating a large fleet of vehicles across the country. That is why we continue to invest heavily in technology, systems and training that help us maintain the highest safety standards.”

Idiege said Dangote Transport had introduced several measures over the years to improve driver performance and minimise risks associated with long-distance haulage.

These, he said, included speed limiters, vehicle immobilisers, speed booster control systems, facial recognition devices, journey management protocols, mandatory drug and alcohol testing, compulsory rest periods, periodic driver recertification and regular training and retraining programmes.

Also speaking, Head of Transport Control, Ifeanyi Ezeala, said the on-board camera system installed across thousands of Dangote trucks was deployed in partnership with technology firm, Nova Tracks.

He explained that the system provides real-time visibility into driver behaviour and generates information that enables transport managers to identify and respond to potential safety risks during journeys.

“The technology allows us to monitor driver activities while journeys are in progress. The cameras provide live feeds and alerts, helping us detect behaviours that could compromise safety and enabling us to take immediate corrective action,” Ezeala said.

According to Ezeala, the monitoring system had also strengthened Dangote’s fleet management capabilities by generating operational data that supports better decision-making and enhances overall safety performance.
