The Association of Energy Correspondents, Abuja (AECAF) has charged the World Energy Council (WEC) Nigeria to prioritise the country’s energy ambitions as the global sector grapples with geopolitical instability, energy transition and growing concerns over energy security.

AECAF gave the charge in a congratulatory message by its Chairman, John Ofikhenua, to Abdulrazaq Isa and Bala Wunti on their appointments as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of WEC Nigeria, respectively.

The association also described the combined experience of the inaugural board members in the energy industry, regulation, finance, academia and professional associations as a strong foundation for the council’s operations.

According to AECAF, Nigeria’s return to the WEC is timely, particularly as the global energy system faces significant changes driven by geopolitical tensions, energy transition and the need to balance affordability, security and sustainability.

It said the development would restore Nigeria’s position within one of the world’s influential energy networks and provide an avenue for the country to contribute to global conversations on energy security, affordability, sustainability and equitable energy transition.

The association urged the council to use its membership to attract investment, deepen international partnerships and promote technological innovation while ensuring that Nigeria’s and Africa’s priorities are adequately represented in global energy decisions.

AECAF also commended President Bola Tinubu for the leadership and efforts that facilitated Nigeria’s return to the WEC, saying the development demonstrated the administration’s commitment to repositioning the country as a stronger voice in the global energy community.

The association described Isa’s appointment as a reflection of confidence in his leadership, entrepreneurial vision and contributions to indigenous refining and industrial development.

It also described Wunti as well suited for the role of chief executive, citing his more than three decades of experience in the energy industry and expertise in strategy, policy formulation, revenue optimisation and sector reform.
