A Lagos-based man, Samson Odunmbaku, has accused the Chairman of Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Segun David Odunmbaku, of assaulting him and subsequently using a man who identified himself as a Department of State Services (DSS) officer to intimidate him over a WhatsApp post.

Odunmbaku alleged that the incident occurred on August 31, 2026, when he honoured an invitation from the council chairman to discuss a message he had posted on his WhatsApp status.

According to him, the chairman had initially invited him through his Personal Assistant, Segun Ayinla, on August 23, asking him to come to his office for a discussion.

He said he was unable to meet the chairman that day because of the latter’s busy schedule and was asked to return later.

Odunmbaku said he eventually visited the chairman’s office on August 31, where he met the council boss, his Chief of Staff, Ms Olaniyan, and a cabinet member, Lekan Peters.

He alleged that the chairman questioned him about a particular WhatsApp post and accused him of writing derogatory comments on his status.

Odunmbaku said he responded in Yoruba, explaining that he had been deeply upset at the time but had moved on.

He alleged that the chairman was dissatisfied with his explanation and became angry.

According to him, the chairman allegedly accused him of insulting his sister, Funke Adepogu Olayomi, before assaulting him.

In his account of the incident, Odunmbaku said: “The chairman asked why I posted a particular message on WhatsApp, writing all sorts of things on my WhatsApp status.

“I responded in Yoruba, ‘Arokan ni sir’ (deep contemplation), that ‘Inu mi baje gidigidi gan’ (I was very sad), but all is gone now, sir.

“The chairman insisted that my response was not satisfactory. He became enraged and said he felt like slapping me because I had insulted his sister, Funke Adepogu Olayomi.

“He slapped me three times while I was trying to respond to him, then punched me and knocked my head.

“He picked up the flagpole in his office and used it to hit my head again. I stood up and left the office for my safety.”

Odunmbaku further alleged that the confrontation continued outside the chairman’s office.

He said that as he approached the gate, he noticed the chairman running towards him.

According to him, the chairman allegedly picked up three long canes and began whipping him on the head until it became swollen.

“I was lucky that people rescued me from him,” he said.

Following the alleged incident, Odunmbaku said he made a post about it on Facebook.

He alleged that shortly afterwards, a man who identified himself as Adeyemi and claimed to be a DSS officer contacted him.

According to Odunmbaku, the man asked him to delete the Facebook post, make an apology video and report to his office in Ikeja.

“He called me several times and I became scared for my life. I didn’t understand why a DSS official was interested in the matter. At least, I should have received a letter of invitation and not have an officer harassing or threatening me,” he alleged.

When contacted by The Guardian over the invitation, Adeyemi confirmed that he had asked Odunmbaku to see him but denied giving details beyond saying he wanted to hear from both parties.

“I asked him to see me by 10 a.m. and I called him again when he didn’t show up,” he said.

Asked in what capacity he had invited Odunmbaku, Adeyemi said: “I want to hear from both himself and the chairman.

“There are some issues that will lead to a breakdown of law and order if not settled immediately. This is a trivial matter.”

The Guardian made four calls to the council chairman, but he did not answer.

He also did not respond to a message sent to him seeking his reaction to the allegations.
