The Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT), Anchor University, Lagos, Pastor Obinna Nkemjika, has assured that the institution would continue to pursue its vision of producing competent, capable and morally upright graduates who would make their mark anywhere in the world.

Nkemjika gave the assurance at the recent inauguration of the third Governing Council of the university, held at the Senate Executive Chambers of the institution in Lagos.

He said the university was committed to producing graduates who are not only academically sound, but also spiritually and morally grounded to provide effective leadership in Nigeria and beyond.

According to him, the institution has, since its establishment, pursued aggressive infrastructural development, recruitment of competent academic staff and introduction of professional programmes to improve the quality of education offered to students.

He recalled that when the current BOT came on board in 2021, the university had about 600 students and only two professors.

Nkemjika, who is also the State Overseer, Deeper Life Bible Church, Abia State, said the institution had since increased its number of professors.

He said the introduction of courses such as Architecture, Law, Nursing Science and Medical Laboratory Science had attracted more students, noting that the university currently has close to 3,000 students.

“Today, we are even turning back students,” he said, attributing the development to improved facilities and the growing reputation of the institution.

He explained that the university had also invested in electricity and other infrastructure, including generators and a 3KVA transformer to create a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

On the quality of graduates, Nkemjika stressed the importance of practical training and adequate facilities, saying students must be exposed to laboratory equipment and other tools from their early years of study.

He added that the institution had strengthened its spiritual structure by appointing a chaplain and making participation in chapel activities part of students’ overall assessment.

The newly appointed Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Joel Babalola, said his administration would focus on three core values: character, competence and courage.

Babalola said the values would not only guide students, but also be reflected in the conduct of staff and management.

He said the university would review its curriculum to make it more relevant to the demands of the contemporary world, with greater emphasis on employability, entrepreneurship and technology.

According to him, graduates should not merely become job seekers but should be equipped to create jobs and compete favourably in Nigeria and globally.

He also stressed the need for lecturers to embrace technology, research and global visibility, saying the university’s ranking would increasingly depend on measurable contributions to knowledge and problem-solving.

Babalola said collaboration with other institutions would also be prioritised, noting that partnerships would enable the university to harness knowledge and expertise from other parts of the world and apply them to solving local challenges.

He expressed optimism that, with God’s help, the university would improve its standing in national and global rankings within the next four years.
