UCL: Osimhen hits target on return to Lille

Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen marked his return to his old stomping ground with a goal on Wednesday night as Galatasaray came back from a goal deficit to beat Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

The Super Eagles striker scored his first Champions League goal of the season against his former club to help the Turkish Champions to their first win after losing their opening two league phase matches.

The first-ever meeting between the two sides lived up to the billing as it ended in a six-goal thriller to the delight of the visitors but dismay of the hosts.

Turkish forward Yunus Akgun gave Galatasaray the lead within two minutes of the first whistle. Akgun tapped the ball into the net after a rebound fell to him.

Soriba Diaoune equalized five minutes later as the French winger beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one before placing the ball into the back of the net.

Galatasaray goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir pulled off a sublime save to stop Diaoune’s brilliant header from landing inside the net in the 24th minute as the hosts pulled pressure on their guests.

The visitors thought they had won a penalty after Berke Ozer appeared to have clattered into an opposition player. The referee initially awarded a penalty but overturned it a few minutes later after a consultation with the video assistant referees.

Hakon Arnar Haraldson played a fine pass to Diaoune, who found himself unmarked in the box; the French forward powered a one-time shot into the top corner to put Lille ahead five minutes before the break.

However, the lead lasted 60 seconds as Alexey Batrakov met Rolland Sallai’s cross with a close-range header to put Galatasaray back into the tie heading into the break.

The night went sour for Lille in the 52nd minute. Berke Ozer put the ball in his own net to give Galatasaray the lead for the second time in the match.

Osimhen got on the score sheet after an impressive display en route to his goal. The Nigerian striker finished off brilliantly from a counter-attacking display to put the game beyond the reach of Lille.

The Nigerian striker didn’t celebrate against his former team as he raised his hands towards the home fans.

Victor Osimhen was given a round of applause by the home fans as he walked off the pitch in the 84th minute.

Galatasaray sealed a 4-2 win to as they move to 23rd on the log while Lille are second from bottom as the French side are without a win after three matches.

Elsewhere, the star fixture of the night ended two goals apiece at the Allianz Arena as the Gunners shared points with Bayern Munich.

Eberechi Eze, who came on for injured Bukayo Saka, gave Arsenal the lead in the 25th minute, while Alphonso Davies restored parity 10 minutes later.

Harry Kane put Bayern Munich ahead from the penalty spot after the hour mark, but Declan Rice snatched a point for Arsenal eight minutes from time as the tie ended 2-2.

Real Madrid made it three wins from three matches in the league phase as Jose Mourinho’s men dismantled RB Leipzig 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu, while Como extended Manchester United’s misery in one of the early kick-offs as Cesc Fabregas’ men sealed a 4-1 win over the Red Devils.
