The publication of the 2027 governorship candidates’ particulars by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has opened a new phase in the contest for the Kwara State Government House, with the emergence of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Salihu Yakubu Danladi.

Youth stakeholders in the three senatorial districts of the state agreed that Danladi’s candidacy brings strong generational dimension to the race.

They added that it could also mark significant turning point in the political evolution of Kwara, particularly as younger politicians increasingly move from participation in governance into mainstream leadership.

The position was contained in a joint statement by the Kwara North Integrity Youth Forum (KNIYF), Ilorin Emirate Dynamic Youths (IEDY) and Kwara South Young Professionals in Politics (KSYPIP).

The statement was signed by the coordinators of the groups, Aliyu Likofu, Abdulwaheed Olamilekan and Owodunni Rasheed Adekunle respectively.

The groups said: “the significance of Danladi’s emergence extends beyond age,” pointing to his political development through student activism, youth mobilisation and legislative leadership.

Speaking on the development, Likofu said: “Danladi’s candidacy had created opportunity to change political history of the state, particularly with regard to Kwara North’s longstanding aspiration for the governorship.

“The 41-year-old Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly was born in Gwanara, Baruten Local Government Area, and has built a political career through student activism, youth mobilisation and legislative leadership.

“He served in student union positions at Kaduna Polytechnic before moving into partisan politics, including campaign coordination roles in 2011 and 2015.

“His breakthrough came in 2019 when he won the Ilesha/Gwanara constituency seat and was elected Speaker at 34. He returned to the Assembly in 2023 and was again elected Speaker. So he is prepared for the race,” he listed.

Likofu said Danladi’s background was particularly significant against the history of political leadership in the state, where Kwara North has not produced an elected governor since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

According to him: “the 2027 contest could therefore provide opportunity for voters to address the question of generational renewal and the longstanding demand for broader geographical inclusion.”

Olamilekan, coordinator of IEDY, said Danladi’s political trajectory was also important in understanding the generational character of the contest.

“Such a trajectory has made his candidacy symbolic of a generation that entered mainstream politics through mobilisation and gradually moved into positions of institutional authority,” he said.

He added that the development was coming against the background of increased youth participation in governance under the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq administration.

“The symbolism is strengthened by the changing political environment in Kwara State. The AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq administration has repeatedly promoted youth participation in governance, with younger people occupying cabinet and other government positions.

“The development also reflects how far youth participation in Kwara politics has progressed, with a new generation increasingly moving beyond political mobilisation into positions of responsibility and leadership,” Olamilekan said.

He said Danladi’s emergence on the APC ticket was a clear expression of that progression, adding that the 2027 governorship contest would provide a wider platform for the experience and energy of the younger generation to be brought to bear on the future of the state.

Also, Adekunle, coordinator of KSYPIP, said Danladi’s emergence represented both continuity and change within the political configuration established in Kwara since 2019.

“For the APC, Danladi’s candidacy represents both continuity and change: continuity with the political order established in 2019 and change through the elevation of a younger generation into the race for executive power,” he said.

Adekunle said the commencement of campaigns would further provide an opportunity for Danladi to present his record, programmes and vision for the state to the electorate.

“As campaigns for the governorship formally commence on September 9, attention will naturally shift to the candidates’ programmes, records and their vision for the future of Kwara,” he said.

He said Danladi’s emergence had already demonstrated that the younger generation had moved beyond political mobilisation into positions of responsibility, adding that the 2027 election would provide the platform for that experience to be translated into executive leadership.

“For Danladi, the February 6, 2027 election represents the next stage of a political journey that has taken him from student and youth leadership to the speakership of the Kwara State House of Assembly and now to the governorship contest,” Adekunle said.

The groups said while Danladi is expected to face Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Engineer Sulaiman Bolakale Kawu, from Kwara Central, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Zakari Mohammed, who also hails from Kwara North, the strength of the contest would provide Danladi an opportunity to demonstrate the depth of his political experience, statewide appeal and capacity to build on the progress recorded in his years of public service.

The groups said the publication of the INEC list had provided a clearer picture of the field, while the commencement of campaigns would now allow the APC candidate to take his programmes and records directly to the electorate.

Adekunle said the 2027 contest would therefore mark an important step in Kwara’s political evolution, with Danladi’s candidacy bringing the experience of a younger generation into the race for the state’s highest elective office.
