The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has arrested a woman for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage in the Sagamu area of the state.

A video circulating on social media shows the woman emptying a yellow sack filled with refuse into a drainage channel while it was raining.

She appeared not feeling remorse or bothered when she noticed she was being recorded during confrontation.

Confirming the development in a post on X, yesterday, the waste authority said that the woman was arrested with the combined efforts of the Environmental Health Officers( EHO) of Sagamu local council.

“The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), in collaboration with the Environmental Health Officers (EHO) of Sagamu Local Government, has apprehended the lady captured in a viral video dumping waste into a drainage channel in Sagamu last Friday,” OGWAMA said.

Head of Information, Environmental Sector, Mr Rotimi Oduniyi said that the woman’s action contravenes the environmental law and public health, adding that she would be charged to court.

Oduniyi said that since the woman would be prosecuted without the option of fine, she did not feel any remorse during confrontation.

“Her(the woman) action goes against the environmental law and public health and we heard she has been persistent in doing it. She has been arrested and prosecuted without fine and the video clip is evidence against her” he added.

Oduniyi said that according to neighbours in the area, the woman had been persistent in the act of dumping refuse into the drainage whenever it rains and despite being warned to desist, she continues.

He said that her arrest would serve as deterrent to others indulge indiscriminate dumping of waste, saying that the agency is determined to make the state clean again.

Oduniyi, therefore, advised residents to shun indiscriminate dumping of waste and use only wast collection operators accredited by OGWAMA.
