*As APC holds interfaith prayer session for Tinubu and Hamzat

*We want to place everything in the hands of God going into the election, say Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC), clerics from the three major faiths in Nigeria on Tuesday prayed for a peaceful, successful and violence-free electoral process,
They offered the prayers during an Interfaith prayer session for the APC presidential candidate, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and its Lagos governorship candidate, Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat.

The prayer session took place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The prayer session was attended by spiritual leaders from the Christian, Islamic and indigenous faiths. They all prayed for a peaceful, successful and violence-free electoral process, and for both candidates to emerge winners.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu stressed the importance of prayers, adding that the essence of the prayer session is to commit the party’s campaign and exercises into the hands of God. The governor stated that after the prayers, the party is now confident to do what is needed of it.

“We are not taking anything for granted. We are not taking anybody for granted. We are not taking any stakeholders for granted. What we have done is ask God Almighty for direction. And now that we have committed it, we know too well that God will answer the prayers of the faithful. Lagos is a faithful state. Nigeria is a faithful country,” said Sanwo-olu.

The governor expressed confidence in the prayers, saying that he believes they will help the president return to office, while also adding that while the party will work, its members are also a people of faith.

The Deputy Governor and governorship candidate, Kadiri Hamzat, said that as the campaign commences, he believes that he has to place everything in the hands of God.

“Our party, the All Progressives Congress, we believe in God. We believe God directs all affairs of human beings. And as such, we are placing our country in the powerful hands of God and our state, Lagos, in the powerful hands of God,” he said.

Musiliu Obanikoro noted that strategy, organisation, hard work and commitment matter, but prayer also has its place in human affairs.

“If we believe that the spiritual influences the physical, then we must acknowledge that there is only so much we can accomplish by our own strengths. There are circumstances beyond our control, and there are doors that only Almighty God can open. That is why, across our different faiths and traditions, we have come together today to seek God’s guidance, protection, wisdom, and favour as we embark on this journey,” he said.

According to Obanikoro, prayer must also be matched by unity and discipline.
