Mohammad Abacha, has emerged as gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2027 general election in Kano.

The son of the late head of State Sani Abacha, emerged during the expanded stakeholders meeting of the party where he was considered through overwhelming affirmation.

Similarly, the party announced the factional Chairman of the party in Kano Alh. Ado Kibiya as running mate to Abacha in next year’s governorship.

Abacha was defeated by Mohammad Dalhatu during the party’s primary in May 2026 to emerge as PDP governorship candidate in Kano.

The primary which was Chaired by Umar Hadejia saw Mohammad Abacha polled 749 votes, while Mohammad Dalhatu secured 2,233 votes to emerge winner of the contest in May.

Fresh dimension however ensued on Wednesday when the party stakeholders’ held another primary where Abacha was affirmed as PDP governorship candidate for the 2027 general election in Kano.

Addressing the stakeholders, the state Chairman of PDP, Dr. Bello Gambo Bichi explained that Abacha’s emergence as party candidate followed the voluntary withdrawal of Mohammad Dalhatu from the contest.

‎According to him, the emergence of Abacha and the entire process was in line with the Constitution and Guidelines of the Peoples Democratic Party. He submitted that such occurrence came after due reconciliation and consultations among the various stakeholders of the Party.

“We have gathered today to undertake the process of affirming our Party’s candidate for the forthcoming Kano State Governorship Election after the withdrawal of Mohammad Dalhatu.

“The law says that as a result of withdrawal, a primary election according to the electoral law, will be held to nominate and replace that candidate. So, that is what brought us here.

‎” We presented Alhaji Muhammad Sani Abacha as the consensus choice of the Party for the office of Governor of Kano State, and having established that he has satisfied the relevant requirements for nomination.

“‎I therefore call upon all leaders, stakeholders, members and supporters of our great Party to unite behind the candidate and work collectively towards strengthening the Party and advancing its objectives in Kano State”. Bichi added.

Earlier, the Chairman PDP gubernatorial replacement primary election panel, Dr. Abba Abdullahi declared that Abacha became lawful replacement of Dalhatu for next year’s Governorship election following the affirmation.

‎According to him, the replacement gubernatorial Primary Election was conducted in accordance with the constitution, guidelines and relevant regulations of the Peoples Democratic Party and applicable electoral laws.

He said the exercise was conducted following the affirmation of the candidature of Alhaji Muhammad Sani Abacha by the duly accredited members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kano State.

‎Dr. Abdullahi explained that the Party has verified Abacha has satisfied the requirements prescribed by the Party and the applicable electoral laws for nomination as a candidate for the office of Governor of Kano State.
