It was celebration galore at the weekend as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State made strong inroad in her quest to reposition for 2027 contests as it received over 6000 members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), into its fold.

The defectors, who had been with the party since it’s formation in the state were led by Mr Godwin Obasi and received by the PDP leadership at a momentous occasion that held in Enugu.

Obasi, who gave reasons for their defection, said they dumped the NDC after the party chose unpopular candidates for the various elective positions.

He said members of his group were among those who earlier joined the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obasi said the same reason that necessitated their exit from the ADC had made them dump the NDC.

“We decided that we were going to join the PDP. It is our right and choice. So, after we congregated, we are here today to officially join the PDP.

“We are from all the 260 wards and 17 local government areas in the state, and all of us have moved into the PDP from today,” he stated.

Receiving the defectors amid loud drumming and ecstacy, the PDP governorship candidate in Enugu State, Chief Uche Nnaji, assured them that they would be well accommodated in the party.

Nnaji said the current government in Enugu had failed in all its promises, adding that the collective efforts of the citizens were needed to rescue the state.

He said the only achievement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the state was suffocating the people with taxation.

Nnaji said that even though dead bodies and newborns were taxed in the state, there was nothing tangible to justify the huge resources generated.

“Our pensioners are not being paid. Enugu is the only place where pensions and gratuities are not being paid to our people.

“Nothing is paid to our people. Everybody is in a mess. Imo and Anambra pay their pensions and gratuities to date. What sin have we committed in Enugu State?

“And President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has released so much money to all the states. What this government here has received is more than what the three previous governors — Chimaroke, Sullivan and Ugwuanyi — put together.

“What they received in 24 years, this government has received in about three years. We are talking of trillions of naira”, he argued

He also questioned the huge internally generated revenue announced by the Enugu State Government in 2025, alleging that it was generated at the cost of the lives and comfort of residents.

Also speaking, a chieftain of the PDP, Basil Ani, said the decision by over 6,000 NDC members to join the PDP in the state was a huge boost for the party.

He said that the PDP was being repositioned in the state, stressing that the defectors would add to the drive to retake Enugu State next year.

He said that Nnaji was lucky to be the”institution” being used to restore PDP in Enugu State, the way he was used to restore APC in the state.

The party’s Senatorial Candidate for Enugu East, Kingsley Nweke, said the new joiners have enamoured the candidates in their quest for victory in the 2027 elections.
