President Bola Tinubu has been chided for not handing over power to the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, after spending more than 21 days outside the country on working leave.

Oyo state Governor and Presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, stated this Tuesday afternoon at the Northwest townhall meeting organised by the Makinde/Daura Presidential Campaign organization in Katsina State.

Speaking, Makinde said it was concerning that president Tinubu was on working leave, and had been out of the country for more thab 21 days.

He said constitutionally, the president ought to have have handed over power to his vice as if he would be out of the country for such number of days.

Recall that Tinubu had departed Nigeria on August 30 for London to begin the working vacation.

The president then spent a week in London, before moving to Paris, France where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Makinde said, “I have looked at the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and, of course, as a state governor, I also operate under that Constitution.

“Anytime I have to travel out, not for work but on vacation, for more than 21 days, I transmit power to the Deputy Governor. Why is this not happening at the national level?

“Section 145 of the Constitution provides for the President to transmit a written declaration to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives when proceeding on vacation or otherwise unable to discharge the functions of office.

“If the President is unable, whether through sickness, a medical trip or incapacitation, to function, we are all human; anything can happen to anybody at any time. If that happens, the President should also transmit power to the Vice President.”

The presidential candidate promised that he would not do same if he gets to become the nation’s number one citizen, adding, “I promise you that, as your President, I will follow the Constitution to the letter. If I am not going to be available, if I am on vacation, I will transmit power to the Vice President. Record this and hold me accountable.”

Makinde futher dismissed what the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja, Nyesome Wike said in a recent interview, that tuw federal government had given Oyo state the sum of N50 billion for the upgrade of the Ibadan airport.

He described the assertion as false, saying that the “Ibadan airport upgrade project is being undertaken 100 percent with the money of Oyo state.”

He also said if elected president, his administration would give priority to a Reset Agenda for the country, giving attention to four priority areas.

According to him, attention would be given to restting the nation’s economy, education, security architecture, and Nigeria’s socio-poltical system.

He called on members of the party to work towards ensuring the success of the APM come general elections, so that the country can become a better place for all.
