• Urge stakeholders to uphold law, joint action against electoral violence
• Shun actions capable of triggering violence, Abiodun tells police

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, has reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state before, during, and after the 2027 general elections.

Ojajuni spoke at a two-day workshop, titled “Elections, Security, the Law, Stakeholders & the Media,” organised by the Ogun State Police Command in collaboration with the Development Communication Research Centre (DCRC).

The commissioner said security agencies had statutory responsibilities to maintain public order and provide security during elections, but added that the effectiveness of those responsibilities depended largely on the conduct and cooperation of other stakeholders.

He urged political parties and their supporters to respect the law while calling on election officials to discharge their duties professionally and impartially.

Ojajuni also urged election observers and monitors to operate within the limits of their mandates and called on the media to provide accurate, balanced, and responsible information.

He further appealed to citizens to exercise their democratic rights peacefully and responsibly.

Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged police personnel in the state to shun actions that could fuel violence during the 2027 general elections, saying they have a vital role to play in safeguarding the democratic process.

Abiodun, who was represented at the workshop by his Special Adviser on Security, AIG Olusola Subair (rtd), said the event became imperative to educate the personnel on what to do before, during and after the election, noting that the police report sometimes influence the final outcome of the elections.

Besides, the Ogun State Police Command has called for stronger cooperation among security agencies, electoral officials, political actors and the media ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ojajuni said election security should not rest on security agencies alone, noting that every stakeholder must help to prevent political competition from descending into violence.

The CP, who cautioned politicians against recruiting cult groups and criminal elements for political purposes, urged journalists and media organisations to prioritise accuracy and verification, particularly when reporting security incidents and allegations of electoral malpractice.

A professional and integrated communication expert/lead presenter at the workshop, Prof. Fassy Yusuf, noted that the success of the 2027 general elections in Ogun State depends on how effectively the police lead, coordinate, and partner with state agencies, electoral authorities and civil societies.

Earlier in his address, the workshop manager, Bolu Folayan said the workshop was organised to ensure peaceful and credible 2027 general elections in Ogun State, noting that elections do not fail due to lack of laws but failure to understand roles under the law.
