Nigerian singer Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known as Mayorkun, has said he would conduct a DNA test before accepting a child as his.
The singer made this known during an appearance on the In My Opinion Podcast, where he discussed relationships, marriage, trust, paternity and his views on monogamy.
Mayorkun revealed that he has already discussed his position on DNA testing with his girlfriend, alongside his intention to sign a prenuptial agreement before marriage.“I told my girlfriend we’d have to do a prenup and DNA test when she gives me a child, just to be sure. She got upset,” he said.
The singer explained that he was not willing to change his position despite his girlfriend’s reaction, adding that he had even considered conducting the test without informing her.“I have thought of doing the DNA test without telling her. If it is my child, no issues. If not, everybody will hear about it,” Mayorkun said.
His comments have sparked conversations about trust, paternity and the place of DNA testing in relationships. The issue of DNA testing has become a recurring subject of public debate in Nigeria, particularly on social media, where discussions about paternity disputes have generated strong reactions.
For Mayorkun, however, biological certainty is an important condition before accepting responsibility for a child. His stance also reflects broader concerns around trust and the potential consequences of disputed paternity.
During the podcast, the singer and the hosts examined whether asking a partner to undergo a DNA test should be considered evidence of distrust. The discussion also covered marriage and the possibility of relationships ending.
The episode, which focused on Mayorkun’s views on relationships and his decade-long career in music, also featured discussions about friendship breakups, Black tax, Afrobeats and his relationship with fellow singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
Mayorkun rose to prominence after joining Davido Music Worldwide in 2016 and has since established himself as one of Nigeria’s notable Afrobeats singers.
He later left the label and continued his career as a solo artiste while maintaining his relationship with Davido. The singer’s latest comments have continued to generate reactions online, with discussions centred on whether DNA testing should be a routine part of establishing paternity or whether it should only be requested when there is a specific concern.
Mayorkun’s position has consequently added another celebrity voice to the ongoing Nigerian debate over DNA testing, trust and responsibility in relationships.
