Family demands probe into killing of police officer in Plateau

Nigeria Police Force

The family of a Mobile Police officer, Abdulrahman Auwal, who was reportedly killed along Kwi-Beco Road between Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Councils of Plateau State, has called on the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

The family said several questions remained unanswered about the incident, including how the officer was attacked and why the motorcycle rider who was reportedly conveying him survived.

Auwal was reportedly killed while returning from a community service after going to buy food. He was buried at Zaria Cemetery in Jos on Saturday.

His mother, Larai Musa, said she had accepted her son’s death as the will of Allah but wanted the police to establish what happened.

“There are still unanswered questions surrounding the death of my son. He was reported to have been macheted with a sharp object while on a motorcycle with an okada rider. My son was killed, and the okada rider is alive,” she said.

Musa questioned who reported the killing and urged the police to identify and question the motorcycle rider who was reportedly with her son.

“The okada rider who reported the death should be able to explain where he took him to, who stopped them and who attacked only the passenger,” she said.

The family said it wanted the police to provide a clear account of the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.

It also expressed disappointment that, four days after the incident, no police officers or colleagues of the deceased had visited to offer their condolences.

As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.

Attempts to obtain a reaction from the command were unsuccessful.
