ASUU strike grounds Taraba varsity over salary dispute

Taraba State University (TSU)

Academic activities at the Taraba State University (TSU) were suspended yesterday as the university’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared an indefinite strike over the state’s alleged failure to implement an agreed remuneration package and pay salary arrears.

The strike followed months of discussions without agreement. The ASUU-TSU demands include the immediate implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU remuneration agreement and payment of all accrued salary arrears from January 2026 to date.

In a statement announcing the strike, the Chairman of ASUU-TSU, Dr Joshua Mbave, said the union had pursued dialogue with the government since February, leading to the formation of a verification committee to review the existing salary structure and assess the implementation of the remuneration agreement across the North-East region.

According to Mbave, the committee submitted its report on September 24, 2026, but the expected resolution did not follow. He said the union had previously suspended the planned industrial action after the government requested more time to address the issues.

However, he stressed that the continued delay after the verification exercise has left the union with no option but to resume its action. The union described the payment as necessary to protect the welfare and dignity of the academic staff.
