Delay in inking new $75,000 deal ‘frustrates’ Chelle

Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is frustrated that despite reaching an agreement on a new deal with Nigeria’s football leadership, the contract for the $ 75,000-a-month deal is yet to be signed.

The NFF and the National Sports Commission (NSC) recently met with the coach and agreed to increase the gaffer’s pay to $75,000, but with the added responsibility of guiding the national U-23 team to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

According to a report, the Franco-Malian is, however, worried that the NSC is yet to invite him to make the deal official in the absence of the NFF board, whose members resigned en masse last month.

Chelle, who led Nigeria to a bronze medal at the last Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, wants to ink the new contract before the 2027 AFCON qualifiers double-header against Tanzania, the report said.

Chelle wants to get the Super Eagles qualification campaign back on track after the 3-0 defeat that the team suffered in Guinea-Bissau.

The report said that Chelle is uncomfortable that despite a gentleman’s agreement over a new contract, he has yet to sign the dotted line.
