Fix business gaps before seeking expansion, SME Mall urges entrepreneurs

Managing Director of The SME Mall, Muyiwa Femi-Pearse

The SME Mall has urged Nigerian entrepreneurs to identify and address internal weaknesses in their businesses before pursuing expansion or additional funding, stating that access to finance alone cannot guarantee sustainable growth.

The organisation said many small businesses possess the ambition and ideas required to succeed but struggle to grow because their systems, structures and processes have not developed alongside the businesses.

Speaking on the organisation’s approach to small business development, Managing Director of The SME Mall, Muyiwa Femi-Pearse, said entrepreneurs needed to understand what was working, what was not and what needed to change before making decisions about the future of their businesses.

“Many small businesses are not held back by a lack of ambition or good ideas. In many cases, the challenge is that the systems, structures and processes needed to support growth have not developed alongside the business. Entrepreneurs need to understand what is working, what is not working and what needs to change before they can make the right decisions about the future of their businesses,” Femi-Pearse said.

He said the organisation was strengthening its commitment to the growth and sustainability of Nigerian businesses through a practical, solution-driven approach focused on helping entrepreneurs identify challenges, improve operations and establish stronger foundations for long-term growth.

According to The SME Mall, weaknesses in financial management, business structures, record-keeping, market visibility, marketing strategies and technology adoption can prevent businesses from reaching their full potential.

The organisation said its approach places business assessment, informed decision-making and targeted support at the centre of enterprise development.

At the heart of the initiative is its Business Health Check, which assesses businesses across six critical areas: legal and regulatory compliance; technology and tools; people and human resources; business strategy; marketing and branding; and finance and accounting.

The assessment is designed to help business owners gain a clearer understanding of their strengths, weaknesses and areas requiring attention.

The SME Mall explained that an entrepreneur experiencing low profitability, for instance, could discover that the challenge goes beyond sales to issues such as poor cost management, inadequate pricing or weak financial records.

Similarly, a business struggling to attract customers may need to examine its branding, market positioning and customer engagement strategy.

By identifying such gaps, the organisation said entrepreneurs could approach business improvement with greater clarity rather than relying solely on assumptions or trial and error.

Femi-Pearse also stressed that while access to finance remained important, it should be considered alongside the internal readiness of a business to manage resources and sustain growth.

“Funding is important, but money alone cannot fix a business that lacks proper financial records, a clear strategy or effective operational systems. Our goal is to help entrepreneurs identify the weaknesses that could limit their progress and understand the solutions available to them. When business owners have a clearer picture of their operations, they are better positioned to make informed decisions, use resources more effectively and pursue growth with greater confidence,” he said.

Beyond identifying challenges, The SME Mall said it helps entrepreneurs understand practical interventions that can improve business performance. These include strengthening financial management, improving marketing and branding, adopting appropriate digital tools, establishing clearer operational processes and accessing professional expertise where necessary.

The organisation said sustainable business development required continuous improvement, particularly as growing enterprises face new demands involving staffing, customer retention, regulatory compliance, technology and financial planning.

It added that providing entrepreneurs with relevant knowledge and support could help them respond to such demands while building businesses better equipped to withstand market changes.

The SME Mall has also continued to promote entrepreneurship through programmes aimed at strengthening enterprise capacity and creating opportunities for business owners.

One of its recent initiatives is the Women in Business Competition (WIBC), which focuses on empowering women entrepreneurs through business assessment, development opportunities and financial support.

The competition featured N3 million in business support for outstanding participants, aimed at helping women-led businesses strengthen their operations and pursue new growth opportunities.

The programme also incorporated the Business Health Check initiative, reinforcing the importance of understanding a business’s needs and identifying gaps that may be limiting its performance.

The SME Mall said the initiative demonstrated its commitment to moving beyond conversations about entrepreneurship to programmes offering practical value to business owners.

It added that combining business evaluation with opportunities for financial support highlighted the importance of equipping entrepreneurs with the knowledge, resources and opportunities required to build sustainable enterprises.

The organisation further acknowledged the contribution of women entrepreneurs to household incomes, employment generation and community development, saying support for women-led businesses with relevant guidance and growth opportunities remained important to building a stronger and more inclusive SME sector.

As it deepens its engagement with the SME community, The SME Mall said it would continue to encourage business owners to take a deliberate approach to growth by examining their operations, addressing weaknesses and making decisions based on a clearer understanding of their businesses.
