Fintiri seeks drones, stronger border security as FSSAM caution against hate speech

ederal and States Security Administrators’ Meeting (FSSAM) in Yola

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has called on the Federal Government to deploy drones, modern surveillance technology and joint border patrols along Nigeria’s porous border with Cameroon to curb arms trafficking, illegal migration and smuggling.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Kaletapwa Faruta George, made the call on while declaring open the Federal and States Security Administrators’ Meeting (FSSAM) in Yola, where security officials examined emerging threats and strategies for strengthening national security.

Fintiri noted that Adamawa’s security challenges required stronger federal intervention, improved operational funding for security agencies and closer cooperation among intelligence services and field operatives. He also urged the expedited establishment of One-Stop Border Posts to strengthen border surveillance and control cross-border criminal activities.

He identified Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), cybercrime, digital radicalisation and the vandalism of critical infrastructure as continuing threats. Adding security operations must be supported by rural development, education and youth empowerment to address the conditions that allow criminal activities to thrive.

The governor also highlighted his administration’s creation of seven new emirates and chiefdoms, alongside support for security agencies and joint operations, as measures aimed at strengthening grassroots intelligence and improving peace across the state. He urged security administrators to develop practical solutions, including coordinated local intelligence networks and digital tracking systems for goods transported along major routes.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), represented by his Special Adviser on Governance and Subnational Matters, Asishana Okauru commended Adamawa’s security efforts and called for stronger intelligence sharing between federal and state authorities. The NSA also urged security administrators to coordinate early ahead of the 2027 general elections and guard against misinformation capable of undermining public confidence, while the meeting’s recommendations called for stronger oversight of mineral trading, improved chemical safety and better protection of people held in custody.
Chairman of the Forum for federal and State Security Administrators, (FSSAM) Sani Aminu, urged security agencies to respect their respective mandates and remain professional as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, warning political actors against hate speech, misinformation and inflammatory campaigns capable of triggering violence. He urged political leaders and their supporters to pursue issue-based campaigns and respect electoral rules to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
The state government also flagged off the distribution of 300 motorcycles and Hilux vehicles to local government areas to strengthen security operations.
