The Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA) has moved for stronger collaboration with the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to enhance data privacy, security, and responsible data management to strengthen its regulatory role.
The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer NPERA, Akutah Pius, speaking when the National Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, and his team paid a visit to NPERA’s Abuja Office, described the collaboration between the two agencies as essential.
Noting that data plays a critical role in the agency’s regulatory operations, he stressed the need for a deeper understanding of data privacy, information security, and the effective management of data to support the Agency’s evolving responsibilities.
According to him, cooperation with the NDPC would help strengthen NPERA’s capacity to handle data responsibly while promoting compliance with relevant data protection requirements.
Olatunji earlier congratulated NPERA on its transition from the Nigerian Shippers’ Council to the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency, describing the development as an important milestone in the agency’s institutional evolution.
He explained that the NDPC is responsible for safeguarding personal data and promoting compliance with data protection standards across public and private sector organisations.
The visit provided an opportunity for both agencies to explore areas of mutual interest, particularly data privacy, information security and the responsible use of data in strengthening institutional effectiveness.
