Nigerian journalist, documentary filmmaker, and producer, Obaji Akpet has announced plans for The Justice Seeker, a new political thriller that examines the consequences of political violence, institutional failure, and the pursuit of justice in Nigeria.
Akpet made the announcement during his birthday celebration at Happy Coffee, Victoria Island, Lagos, in the company of actors, entertainment and media executives, entrepreneurs, friends, and associates.
The event attracted several notable personalities, including Evelle, winner of Nigerian Idol in 2014; renowned actor Alvin Abayomi; Prince Unigwe; Sharon Unigwe; Amanda Unigwe; Juliet Kings; and other guests from the entertainment and business communities.
The Justice Seeker is a political thriller set against the turbulent aftermath of Nigeria’s disputed 2023 presidential election.
The story follows a principled police investigator tasked with unraveling a series of calculated assassinations targeting powerful political figures. As the investigation deepens, he uncovers connections between the killings, electoral manipulation, and a classified operation that threatens to expose the darkest secrets of the political establishment.
Blending investigative suspense with a broader examination of Nigeria’s political and judicial institutions, the film explores what happens when those entrusted with protecting the law become implicated in the very injustices they are meant to prevent.
For Akpet, the project is an opportunity to explore questions of public interest through compelling cinematic storytelling.
Black Letter Studios to Lead the Project
The project will be developed under Black Letter Studios, a subsidiary of Obaji Group, the parent organisation associated with a portfolio of creative, media, and business ventures, including Africa Fixers, a pan-African film production logistics company supporting productions across the continent.
Through Black Letter Studios, Akpet aims to build a production that combines gripping drama with a distinctly African perspective on political accountability and the search for justice.
Speaking on the project, Akpet, said: “This is a story about power, memory, accountability, and the consequences of burying the truth. Announcing the project on my birthday is my way of committing another year of my life to telling stories that matter.”
Speaking on his birthday, Akpet, said: “My birthday is a moment to reflect on the journey so far and the stories I still want to tell. With The Justice Seeker, I want to explore a question that is both deeply Nigerian and universally relevant: what happens when the institutions established to deliver justice fail the very people they are meant to protect?”.
Speaking also, Leonard Nformi described Akpet as a go-getter that warms every heart, acknowledging his drive, personal warmth, and ability to connect with people across different professional and social circles.
His birthday celebration also featured a special presentation by Chief Executive Officer, Happy Coffee, Princess Adeyinka Tekenah.
Tekenah described Akpet, who serves as the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) Lagos Hub Lead, as a hardworking entrepreneur whose qualities reflect the spirit of enterprise and leadership that African entrepreneurs should embrace.
“Obaji is hardworking and demonstrates the entrepreneurial qualities that entrepreneurs across Africa can learn from and imbibe. His commitment and drive reflect the spirit of entrepreneurship that TEF seeks to encourage.”
The project is currently in development, with opportunities to engage actors, screenwriters, producers, cinematographers, investors, and other creative and production partners as it advances towards production.
With The Justice Seeker, Akpet intends to bring a tense, character-driven political thriller to the screen one that entertains while inviting audiences to reflect on the relationship between justice, revenge, and the institutions on which a nation depends.
