Police arrest officers, seven suspects over assault, rape, robbery, vandalism

Nigeria Police Force

Police commands in Ogun, Cross River and Delta states have arrested four officers and seven suspects in separate cases involving alleged assault, rape, armed robbery and vandalism of public infrastructure.

In Ogun State, four police officers have been arrested over the alleged assault of a young man in Ijagba, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Council, after a viral video showed them pinning him to the ground and attempting to force him into a commercial minibus over his camouflage shorts.

The footage, first posted on TikTok by HairbyArik and later shared on X by @Godsboy441, showed the man struggling against the officers and crying for help, prompting residents to gather and challenge the policemen.

A woman was heard questioning the officers’ conduct, while others demanded that the handcuffs be removed from the young man. The confrontation reportedly ended with his release.

In Cross River State, police arrested three men over the alleged vandalism and theft of streetlight panels and armoured cables at the State Housing Estate in Calabar.

The suspects, Daniel Garuba, 28; Edem Lukas, 24; and Richard Edet, 22, were arrested following a complaint filed on October 16 by an electrical consultant to the state Electrification Agency.

According to the police, detectives attached to the State Housing Division acted on the report and apprehended the suspects. Investigations are ongoing to establish their individual roles in the alleged offence.

The command clarified that the case was separate from another investigation into the alleged vandalism of a transformer at Agbo Ntoe Layout, off Parliamentary Extension, Calabar. That investigation led to the arrest of a 36-year-old suspect, Peter Adie, and others over suspected links to the theft or receipt of electricity materials.

Also in Cross River, a 26-year-old man, Emmanuel Adoga, was arrested over allegations of rape and armed robbery in Ogoja Local Council.

The suspect was arrested on October 12 after the father of a 22-year-old woman petitioned the police on October 9 on her behalf.

The police said the petition alleged that Adoga threatened the woman with a dangerous object, sexually assaulted her and took her Infinix Smart 7 phone.

He was also accused of demanding an additional N15,000.

The command said the phone had been recovered, while investigators visited the reported scene and obtained photographic and electronic evidence. The survivor has undergone medical examination and is receiving treatment.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said investigations would determine the next steps. He also warned against publishing information that could identify or further traumatise survivors of sexual violence.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said operatives of the Commissioner of Police’s Special Assignment Team arrested Thankgod Ejakpomewhe, 29, in Ujode community, Ughelli North, on October 16 over alleged links to an armed robbery syndicate.

A locally made long gun and a live cartridge were recovered from him, while other suspected members of the group reportedly fled.

In a separate operation on October 15, operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrested four suspects at a suspected criminal hideout in Alisimen community, Ika South.

The suspects were identified as Okwunzuwa Rubben, 28; John Onyeka, 42; Uzoma Ifeyinwa, 20; and Osas Atoe, 22.

Edafe said a double-barrelled pump-action gun, five live cartridges, a laptop, six mobile phones, a camouflage cap and a camouflage jacket were recovered during the operation.
