Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has become the first person to undergo a clinical assessment at the newly commissioned Chief Dr Leemon Ikpea Ultramodern Hospital in Ewatto, Esan South-East Local Government Area of the state.
The assessment was conducted by the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Branch, Dr Andrew Oseghale Eigbedion, during a guided tour of the facility on Monday, October 19, 2026.
The governor voluntarily submitted himself for a physical assessment at the hospital’s proposed Emergency Unit, where a multiparameter patient monitor was used to measure his vital signs.
According to the account of the exercise, the monitor recorded normal readings for his pulse rate and oxygen saturation. Eigbedion explained the results to the governor and described the readings as reassuring.
The exercise was witnessed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate; the hospital’s benefactor, Chief Dr Leemon Ikpea; the Chief Medical Director of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), Professor Reuben Agbons Eifediyi; and ISTH intensivists Dr Charles Ikhifa and Dr Irene Akhideno, among other dignitaries.
The assessment marked an early demonstration of the hospital’s medical equipment and highlighted the role of clinical evaluation in patient care.
Medical professionalism, leadership converge
The encounter provided a symbolic moment during the commissioning of the healthcare facility, with the Edo NMA chairman conducting the first clinical assessment and the governor becoming the first person to undergo the exercise.
It also offered an opportunity to demonstrate the importance of monitoring vital signs and promoting preventive healthcare.
Okpebholo’s participation highlighted the importance of public confidence in clinical assessment and the healthcare services being established for residents.
The exercise further demonstrated how medical equipment can support the initial evaluation and monitoring of patients, particularly in emergency and critical-care settings.
The commissioning of the Chief Dr Leemon Ikpea Ultramodern Hospital represents an investment in healthcare infrastructure aimed at expanding access to medical services in Ewatto and neighbouring communities.
The proposed Emergency Unit, where the governor’s assessment took place, underscores the importance of prompt clinical evaluation, patient monitoring and preparedness in emergency care.
The presence of senior government officials, medical professionals and representatives of healthcare institutions at the event also highlighted the role of collaboration in strengthening Nigeria’s health system.
Ikpea’s investment reflects the contribution private philanthropy can make towards complementing government efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure and bring modern medical services closer to underserved communities.
The assessment added a practical dimension to the commissioning ceremony, moving beyond formal speeches and proceedings to demonstrate the use of clinical equipment at the facility.
For the hospital, the exercise marked an early milestone as it prepares to serve residents of Ewatto and surrounding areas. It also highlighted the role of medical professionals in promoting quality healthcare and the importance of cooperation between government and the medical community.
