The African Action Congress (AAC) has formally written to President Bola Tinubu, requesting permission to inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council for its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, Abuja, on November 11, 2026.
The request is contained in a letter dated October 21, 2026, signed by the party’s National Secretary, Oshiokhue Philip Ikpeminoghena. It was issued as a press release by the party, which fields Sowore as its presidential candidate.
Beyond the use of the Villa as the venue, the party also asked for food, drinks and logistical support for 5,000 participants expected to attend the inauguration from Nigeria and abroad.
The AAC said its request was based on the principles of multiparty democracy, political inclusiveness and equal treatment. It cited similar arrangements reportedly extended to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that what is made available to one political party should be open to others.
The party also insisted that public institutions must serve all Nigerians without partisan discrimination. In the same vein, it challenged the Tinubu administration to demonstrate its commitment to fairness and equal access.
The development was announced on the party’s official account on X, where it was accompanied by the hashtags #AACOurParty and #Sowore2027.
The post has drawn mixed reactions from commentators, who are divided on the merits of the request. Some described the presidential candidate as a content creator with jokes up his sleeve, suggesting that granting his request could pose a danger to the Villa. Others viewed the move as a good expression of democracy and opposition, consistent with the principle of multiparty politics.
At the centre of the debate is whether the Presidential Villa, as public property, should be made available to 5,000 people for the sake of multiparty democracy.
As at the time of filing this report, there had been no response from the Presidency on the issue.
