Nigeria’s diplomatic presence in Cyprus has entered a new chapter following the formal presentation of Letters of Credence by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, Ambassador Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, to the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.
The ceremony took place at the weekend at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, Cyprus, in line with diplomatic tradition, marking the official commencement of Ambassador Ufochukwu’s tour of duty as Nigeria’s principal envoy to the Mediterranean island nation.
The Nigerian Ambassador conveyed the fraternal greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the host President and informed him of her commitment to boost relations between the two countries during her tour of duty.
The presentation of credentials is a significant milestone in bilateral relations between both countries, formally accrediting her to perform representational duties and to serve as the official channel of communication between Abuja and Nicosia.
In his remarks, President Christodoulides warmly welcomed Ufochukwu and reaffirmed the deep and enduring friendship between Cyprus and Nigeria.
He said Cyprus and Nigeria share ties of friendship, born out of their shared historical experiences, common principles and the enduring links between their peoples.
The Cypriot President added that his country fully comprehends Nigeria’s significant role in West Africa and across the African continent, as well as its contribution to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.
President Christodoulides further assured that the government of Cyprus stands ready to work closely with Nigeria to advance relations in areas of mutual interest.
According to him, those areas include the economy, trade and investment, education and political dialogue while at the same time, addressing common challenges, both bilaterally and multilaterally.
The statement underscores Cyprus’s readiness to deepen engagement with Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, at a time when both countries are seeking to expand partnerships beyond traditional diplomacy.
For Nigeria, the appointment of Ufochukwu signals renewed commitment to strengthening its footprint in Europe and the Mediterranean region, particularly in areas of economic cooperation, education and diaspora welfare.
Diplomatic observers say the renewed engagement is expected to open new opportunities for Nigerian businesses, students and professionals in Cyprus while also creating a platform for increased Cypriot investment in Nigeria.
The ceremony at the Presidential Palace was attended by senior officials of the Cypriot government and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.
Ambassador Ufochukwu is expected to immediately begin a round of engagements with Cypriot government officials, business leaders and the Nigerian community in the country as part of efforts to translate the renewed goodwill into concrete outcomes for both nations.
The presentation of Letters of Credence marks the beginning of what both sides described as a promising new phase in Nigeria-Cyprus relations, built on friendship, mutual respect and shared interests.
