The police in Ogun and Cross River states have arrested two suspects in separate cases involving alleged theft of a motorcycle and a generator, and the rape of an 11-year-old girl.
In Ogun State, operatives of the state police command arrested a man, Adam Muhammed, in connection with the alleged theft of a motorcycle and a generator in Itori, Ewekoro Local Council.
The suspect was arrested at about 7.30 a.m. on Sunday after a motorist alerted the police to a suspicious tricycle conveying the items.
The motorist reportedly sighted an unregistered tricycle carrying a grey Haojue Lady motorcycle and a Firman generator, with two passengers on board, at Onigbedu, Itori.
Suspecting that the items might have been stolen, the motorist alerted the police while trailing the tricycle to Complex Junction, Itori, towards Papalanto.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued in Abeokuta yesterday.
He said operatives of the Ewekoro Divisional Police Headquarters moved swiftly to intercept the tricycle after receiving the report.
According to him, the two occupants attempted to flee, but Muhammed was apprehended after a chase, while efforts were ongoing to arrest his fleeing accomplice.
Babaseyi said preliminary investigations had linked the recovered motorcycle and generator to a reported theft in Itori.
He added that the suspect remained in custody as detectives continued investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and apprehend other persons involved.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their prompt response and praised the motorist for alerting the police.
Ojajuni said timely intelligence and effective police action were essential to preventing crime and protecting property.
He, therefore, urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements and activities promptly.
In Cross River State, the police arrested a 35-year-old woman, Okputu Bridget, over the alleged sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl in Yala Local Council.
The incident was reported to the Okpoma Divisional Police Headquarters on October 24 by the victim’s father, who alleged that the suspect lured and sexually assaulted the girl on October 18 before leaving her at a location within the community.
The police said the victim had been referred to a general hospital for medical examination, while the suspect was arrested and detained.
A statement by the Command’s Spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Akata, said the Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, had directed that investigation be concluded promptly and the case file transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
The Command reiterated its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons, urging members of the public to report suspected sexual offences promptly.
It also cautioned against circulating information or images that could identify the victim and expose her to further harm.
The police stressed that the suspect remained presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
