After 15 years of poor electricity supply, residents and businesses at Rigasa community in Igabi Local Council Area of Kaduna State are set to benefit from improved electricity supply following the commencement of a Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) project designed to address years of inadequate power access.
The project, which includes a two-kilometre 11kV line, a 1.5-kilometre 33kV line and a 7.5MVA, 33/11kV injection substation, is expected to strengthen electricity distribution in the community.
Facilitated by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Ideological Group (BAT-IG), the project reached a major milestone yesterday with a groundbreaking ceremony performed by Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani.
The governor, represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe, described the NDPHC intervention as a life-saving initiative that would ease the community’s longstanding electricity challenges.
The intervention followed sustained advocacy by BAT-IG Convener, Comrade Bamidele Atoyebi, who repeatedly drew the attention of the NDPHC Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Jennifer Adighije, to the community’s electricity problems, culminating in the company’s commitment to the project.
Speaking through the Executive Director, Networks, Bello Babayo Bello, Adighije explained that though the company primarily generates electricity, its interventions extend across generation, transmission and distribution to address infrastructure gaps and expand access.
Adighije said the Rigasa project would alleviate residents’ hardship and demonstrate the impact of targeted infrastructure development.
The project forms part of NDPHC’s efforts to extend critical power infrastructure beyond generation, bridge electricity gaps, stimulate socioeconomic development and improve the quality of life in underserved communities.
