INEC bows to pressure, uploads voter register online, final list out December

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan

NDC vows to fight over omitted candidates, warns against split-ticket voting
Following concerns by Nigerians and other stakeholders over the accessibility of the voter register, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has uploaded the preliminary register of voters for the 2027 general election to its online platform.

But the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has vowed to do everything necessary to ensure that its candidates omitted from the INEC final list are allowed to participate in the 2027 general elections.

The commission said the online publication was intended to complement the physical display of the preliminary register conducted nationwide from October 9 to 15, 2026, and enable more Nigerians to inspect their particulars.

Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, said the register could be accessed through https://display.inecnigeria.org.

The commission said it had taken note of concerns expressed by Nigerians and stakeholders about the need to make the register available online in addition to the physical display already conducted at registration areas.

INEC said it was still processing claims and objections arising from the exercise ahead of the certification and publication of the final register of voters on December 15, 2026.

The commission added that the additional measure was part of its commitment to transparency, accessibility and public confidence in the electoral process.

It urged Nigerians and stakeholders to continue engaging with the process, reiterating its commitment to implementing the Electoral Act, 2026, and delivering credible elections.

NDC also faces the challenge of members who may vote for its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, while supporting candidates of other political parties for governorship, National Assembly and House of Assembly seats.

The development raises concerns about the party’s ability to translate support for its presidential ticket into votes for its candidates across other levels of government.

NDC’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, gave the assurance yesterday at the party’s third National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, pledging that the leadership would take all necessary steps to secure the participation of candidates omitted from INEC’s final list.

Cleopas said the party would not abandon any of its candidates, insisting that it would work to resolve the discrepancies and ensure those affected could contest in the forthcoming elections.

He did not want the affected candidates to be left behind as the party prepared for the 2027 polls.

The issue featured amid broader discussions on the party’s electoral preparations, internal reconciliation and the need to strengthen its structures ahead of the elections.

The chairman disclosed that the party’s reconciliation committee had visited the geopolitical zones to engage aspirants dissatisfied with the outcomes of its primaries.
