Insecurity forces Taraba to suspend Zing jubilee, Lamdo Gashaka anniversary

Taraba State map

The worsening security situation in parts of Taraba state has forced the state government to postpone two major traditional and cultural celebrations, highlighting the growing impact of insecurity on public gatherings and community events.

The affected events, as observed by The Guardian, are the golden jubilee celebration of Zing local government council and the 10th anniversary of the Lamdo Gashaka, which were earlier scheduled for October 29 and 31, 2026, respectively.

The postponement followed the recent attack on Binari Village in Amar Ward, Karim-Lamido local government council as well as ongoing military operations around Gashaka-Gumti National Park in Gashaka local government council.

The Taraba state Security Committee announced the decision in a press release issued on Monday, stating that it was reached in consultation with the state government in response to the prevailing security concerns.

The development has disrupted preparations for two significant occasions expected to bring together traditional rulers, government officials, community leaders, invited guests and residents from within and outside the state.

The golden jubilee celebration of Zing local government area, which was to take place on October 29 at the Town Field in Zing, was expected to feature the launch of a book documenting the history of the council.

The event was intended to provide an opportunity for the people of Zing to reflect on the area’s history, development and cultural heritage as the local government marks 50 years of existence.

Similarly, the 10th anniversary celebration of the Lamdo Gashaka, Alhaji Zubairu Hammangabdo Muhammad Sambo, scheduled for October 31 at Serti Township Stadium in Serti, has also been put on hold.

The anniversary was expected to mark a decade of the traditional ruler’s reign and bring together traditional institutions, government representatives and other stakeholders to celebrate the Gashaka Emirate.

However, the security situation has compelled the authorities to prioritise public safety over the planned festivities.

According to the security committee, both events have been rescheduled for the last week of November 2026 to allow security agencies to conclude their ongoing operations and ensure the safety of participants.

The decision comes amid concerns over the recent security breach in Binari Village, Karim-Lamido, where an attack raised fresh questions about the safety of residents and the need to strengthen security across the affected communities.

The ongoing military operations around Gashaka-Gumti National Park have also contributed to the government’s decision to defer public gatherings in the area.

Although the postponement may disappoint organisers, traditional institutions and residents who had anticipated the celebrations, the government said the measure was necessary to protect lives and property.

The security committee expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the decision and appealed for the understanding and cooperation of traditional rulers, stakeholders and residents of Zing and Gashaka local government areas.

It also urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding while supporting security agencies with timely and credible information that could assist efforts to address the security challenges.

The rescheduling of the two events underscores how security concerns are increasingly influencing public activities in Taraba State, with authorities seeking to balance cultural celebrations and traditional obligations against the need to safeguard lives and maintain public order.
