Author offers essential financial literacy to Nigerians abroad

Digital banking

Certified Financial Counsellor, Daniel Adeyinka has released a free Reader’s Edition of his book How Money Works in Canada: A Newcomer’s Guide to Banking, Credit, and Building Your Life with Confidence. It gives newcomers, and the organisations that support them, a chance to read the full first chapter before deciding on the book.

The book, published by Babanlar Press, explains banking, credit and debt in Canada in plain language, for people planning a move, those who have just arrived, and anyone still finding their feet.

Drawing on his personal experience of relocating across Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada within five years, Adeyinka combines lived experience with professional expertise in mortgages, life insurance, and financial counselling. The book offers an empathetic, plain-language roadmap designed to turn financial confusion into confidence.

The Reader’s edition opens with a story many newcomers will recognise. Adeyinka walked into a mall in Winnipeg to buy a SIM card. He was surprised by the price, then asked for a soft credit check and his Social Insurance Number. In the UK, where he had lived before, the same purchase involved no credit check. The experience taught him that in Canada a phone plan is often a first contract with the credit system.

Adeyinka said: “One of the biggest challenges newcomers face isn’t necessarily a lack of financial knowledge. It’s that they’re trying to apply what they already know to a system that works differently.

“My goal isn’t to tell newcomers what to do with their money.

It’s to help them understand the system well enough to make decisions with clarity and confidence.”

Adeyinka has lived in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada within five years. He then trained in mortgages, life insurance and financial counselling, and became a Certified Financial Counsellor. The book is written to explain the system so readers can make their own decisions, not to tell them what to do with their money.

“If this book helps one newcomer avoid an expensive mistake, ask a better question or feel more confident navigating money in Canada, then it has done what I wrote it to do,” says Adeyinka.
