Cardinal John Onaiyekan has expressed support for efforts by opposition political parties to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of providing Nigerians with credible alternatives and strengthening the country’s democracy.
The Cardinal gave his position on Thursday, October 29, 2026, when leaders of political parties under the G100 Coalition, comprising National Chairmen and National Secretaries of participating parties, visited him at his residence to brief him on their efforts to build a united opposition platform.
During the meeting, the delegation explained the coalition’s progress towards securing greater cooperation among opposition parties, attracting more political parties and establishing mechanisms to address disagreements that could undermine the alliance.
The leaders also informed the Cardinal that work had been concluded on three major documents intended to guide the coalition’s operations and policy direction.
The documents include the National Covenant for Democratic Renewal, which outlines the coalition’s guiding principles; the Framework for Opposition Unity, which establishes the structure for cooperation among participating parties; and the National Reform Programme, which sets out the policy priorities of a government emerging from the proposed partnership.
The coalition said it was working towards the final adoption of the documents ahead of its Second Summit scheduled for Monday, November 9, 2026, when participating political parties are expected to formally endorse and publicly unveil them.
In his remarks, Cardinal Onaiyekan commended the opposition leaders for their efforts and expressed support for their initiative to build a united political front ahead of the elections.
He welcomed the prospect of Nigerians having credible political alternatives in 2027, noting that citizens should have the opportunity to make informed choices about the country’s leadership and future.
The Cardinal further emphasised the need for competent, honest and compassionate leadership to address Nigeria’s numerous challenges and improve the living conditions of its citizens.
The delegation assured him that the coalition remained committed to building a platform focused on providing Nigerians with a new vision for governance, with particular attention to citizens’ welfare, national security and restoring public confidence in leadership.
The leaders also expressed appreciation for the Cardinal’s longstanding commitment to justice and compassion and sought his continued prayers for the success of the coalition’s efforts.
As part of its ongoing consultations, the coalition disclosed that its leaders would visit other prominent Nigerians and diplomatic missions in the coming weeks to brief them on its activities and objectives.
