Katsina govt clarifies Yankara incident, urges calm

Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda

The Katsina State Governnent has clarified on an incident in Yankara, Faskari Local Government Area, where some campaign vehicles belonging to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), were set ablaze by an angry mob.

The incident which occured on Saturday morning while a convoy of APC campaign vehicles was passing through the community, had reportedly led to the loss of a life, with several others said to have sustained injuries.

The Yankara incident comes a few days after another angry mob reportedly threw stones, sachets of water, among other items, at convoys of APC campaign vehicles passing through Malumfashi council area.

According to news reports, both the convoy of the state governor as well as convoys of APC supporters ferrying through to a campaign rally in Funtua council area, were attacked with stones, and rated items.

This development had raised rumours and unconfirmed reports on social media, that governor Radda’s campaign rally convoy had also been stoned by the angry mob during the Yankara incident.

But the state government, in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Mohammed, said the Yankara incident was unlated to Governor Dikko Radda’s campaign rally, contrary to reports linking the two events on social media.

Mohammed said preliminary information indicated that the incident arose from a disagreement between participants in a Maulud procession and security personnel over designated routes for the procession, resulting in confusion along a public street in Yankara.

“The government stressed that the incident had no connection with the governor’s campaign activities or the Tinubu-Dikko campaign rally in Faskari.

“Governor Radda passed through Yankara safely on his way to Faskari, where he first visited the District Head’s Palace and was received by the District Head alongside other traditional leaders.

“The governor subsequently proceeded to the Faskari Local Government Secretariat, where he inspected ongoing renovation works at the Secretariat and Council Chambers before attending the campaign rally and meeting residents and supporters.

“The government called on relevant security agencies to investigate the incident and establish the circumstances surrounding what happened.

“It also urged media organisations, bloggers and social media users to verify information before publishing or sharing reports, particularly those capable of creating confusion and heightening tension.

“The government appealed to residents to remain calm, maintain peace and refrain from spreading unverified information.”
