Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has charged youths of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to take the lead in the party’s grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Jigawa State.
Lamido described the youths as the party’s foot soldiers, urging them to use their energy, influence and social media platforms to mobilise voters and communicate the PDP’s message across the state.
He gave the charge during a meeting with youth leaders and social media operators drawn from different platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok on Saturday, where he outlined the party’s plans for a statewide campaign.
The former governor said the PDP would begin its campaign across the three senatorial zones before extending its activities to all 27 local government areas of the state.
He stressed that the party would adopt an issue-based campaign, insisting that its message should focus on governance, development and the records of previous and present administrations.
According to him, the youths should explain what his administration achieved between 2007 and 2015 and compare those achievements with the performance of the current APC government led by Governor Umar Namadi.
Lamido urged the young supporters to present the PDP’s record to voters and draw attention to areas where they believe the present administration has fallen short.
He also advised them to maintain discipline throughout the campaign, warning against distractions that could shift attention away from issues affecting the people.
The former governor said social media would be an important tool for reaching voters, particularly young people, and encouraged influencers to use their platforms to promote political discussions around governance and development.
He emphasised that the responsibility of the youths would go beyond online mobilisation, urging them to establish a strong presence in their communities and work towards building support for the party.
Lamido further called on the youths to participate actively in the electoral process by serving as party agents, maintaining order at polling units and protecting votes during the 2027 elections.
He said the party needed committed and disciplined supporters who would defend the electoral process and ensure that the votes of citizens were respected.
Expressing concern over the direction of Jigawa State, Lamido claimed that the state was gradually dying under the present APC administration.
He accused the government of failing to sustain the development recorded during his tenure, alleging that some of the achievements of his administration had been lost.
The former governor declared that enough was enough, in an apparent reference to the hardship confronting residents and his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.
He, however, expressed confidence in the commitment of PDP members to the development of the state.
“We are proud of Jigawa State and we are patriotic citizens of the state. We will work tirelessly to bring development to the state,” he told the gathering.
Lamido governed Jigawa State from May 29, 2007, to May 29, 2015, on the platform of the PDP.
He was succeeded by Mohammed Badaru Abubakar of the APC, who completed two terms before handing over to his former deputy, Umar Namadi, in May 2023.
The PDP has picked Mustapha Sule Lamido, son of the former governor, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election. Mustapha also contested the Jigawa governorship election in 2023 but lost to Namadi.
The 2027 contest will offer the PDP another opportunity to challenge the APC’s hold on the state.
Lamido’s engagement with youths and social media influencers signals the party’s intention to make grassroots mobilisation, digital communication and its record in government central to its campaign strategy.
The state chairman, Babandi Ibrahim Gumel, disclosed this while speaking at the meeting with youth leaders and social media influencers drawn from across the state.
Gumel commended the participants for their efforts in promoting the party and protecting its image across different media platforms.
He urged them to sustain the momentum, particularly through social media engagement and grassroots mobilisation, as the party prepares for the next election.
He said the meeting was organised to strengthen communication between the party leadership and young supporters responsible for projecting its activities and positions.
Participants included youth leaders from the various local government areas, social media influencers and individuals using radio platforms to promote the party’s image.
The Director-General of the PDP Campaign Council in Jigawa State, Shehu Liman, indicated that the party is preparing its youths and social media influencers for an issue-based campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.
Liman also encouraged them to compare the achievements of the PDP when it governed Jigawa State with the performance of the current administration, using evidence to make their arguments.
He said the party intended to market its candidates by presenting its records in government and explaining what it hoped to achieve if returned to power.
The meeting forms part of the PDP’s efforts to strengthen its grassroots mobilisation and coordinate its media strategy ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
