For a night expected to deliver classical and undiluted jazz music, Arite Monday Akosubo showed that she was made for the moment, as she took music lovers to long hours journey of rhythm and electric performances.
The show tagged, Jazz, Wine and Whiskey, connected lovers of the soulful music to the night’s soiree.
Through the night, Arite channelled her personal feelings into spontaneous solos, making every performance raw and energetic.
Speaking with The Guardian, she said: “Jazz, Wine and Whiskey is my brainchild; I love jazz music. I think one of the best companions of jazz music is either wine or Whiskey. Most ladies say they love wine while the men pick whiskey.”
The Berklee College of Music-trained virtuoso added: “Jazz speaks to my soul; there is something about the genre that I can’t let go of. It reminds me of my root, it has a nostalgic feeling that I love and that’s why I’m sticking to it despite the popularity of other genres.
“People underrate jazz, they tag it an old people’s music but jazz in its element has a way of elevating one’s mood and broadening the mind. Jazz is a beautiful nonsense that makes you ask for more as many instruments come together.”
“Tonight, I can say I gave my best to entertain the people that came out to show me love. The love for the career has been the fuel. Even when I’m tired, the love keeps me up and going.
“People should always expect premium entertainment from me. I appreciate those who came out to show their support.”
Speaking also, Nigerian dancer, Yeni Kuti, said: “Arite is phenomenal. She performed at Felabration and it was amazing. She’s a talented singer. She has followed her own path and I think she should stick with it.
“Soulful music has its place; we have artistes like Asa who is good example of those who have made it in the genre.
“We need to invest more in music; music keeps people happy and calm so, if you want people to be happy, invest in music.
On her part, CEO, Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board, Bukola Agbaminoja, said: “The Lagos State government has always supported Arite and tonight is another testament that we believe in her craft.
“Jazz music is a kind of music that transcends languages. It is a music that relaxes everyone. I’ve always loved jazz music and I believe in Arite’s capacity. We will always be there for her and other creatives in Lagos State.
