The Director-General of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Austin O. Akobundu, has thanked party supporters and Nigerians for the massive reception accorded the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, during their visits to Sokoto and Kebbi states.
Akobundu described the turnout as a strong expression of public enthusiasm for the ADC campaign and Nigerians’ determination to have a say in the country’s future.
In a statement, he expressed gratitude to those who turned out to welcome the candidates, stood by the party and made the rallies a demonstration of support for its presidential ticket.
He, however, challenged the Federal Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration to demonstrate confidence in their electoral strength by allowing a free and fair election.
Akobundu alleged that attempts to stop the ADC through what he described as a backdoor court process had raised concerns about the government’s willingness to submit itself to a genuine electoral contest.
“If the Federal Government and the APC believe they have the capacity to win, let them allow a free and fair election. Let Nigerians choose without intimidation, obstruction or interference. They must stop trying to muzzle the political space and using a backdoor court process to remove us from the contest,” he said.
He insisted that Nigerians must be allowed to hear competing political ideas, attend campaign events and freely choose their leaders without intimidation or interference.
According to him, the ballot must remain the people’s choice, while all political parties must be allowed to campaign without obstruction.
The ADC campaign council chief urged party supporters to remain calm and resolute, stressing the need to sustain peaceful and confident political engagement across the country.
He said the party would continue to reach out to Nigerians with its message of affordable living, greater opportunities and national renewal.
Akobundu reiterated the party’s appreciation to residents of Sokoto and Kebbi for the reception accorded its candidates, expressing optimism about further engagements as the campaign progresses.
