Kudos to ECOWAS on Burkina Faso

letterSIR: The Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) wholeheartedly congratulates the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) the African Union (AU), European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) for the civil and prompt resolution of the constitutional crisis in Burkina Faso occasioned by the unconstitutional and undemocratic military takeover of power by the Presidential Guards.

We are indeed glad about the resolution of the crisis by ECOWAS, which goes a long way to do justice to democracy and the image of the African continent and has resulted in the return to power of the transitional government, with its attendant effect of restoration of constitutionalism, law and order.

We give kudos to the people of Burkina Faso for remaining steadfast, resolute and keeping faith with democracy by embarking on civil disobedience in rejecting the military putsch and demanding a return to power of the illegally overthrown transitional government, which eventually came to pass and is a big lesson to other African countries that when the people say ‘No,’ no force can say ‘Yes.’

The transitional government should ensure that the coupists whose unconstitutional overthrow of a legitimate government led to a breakdown of law and order and which resulted in the loss of innocent lives are brought to justice.
