FIFA President Gianni Infantino has described the situation involving Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan as “unfortunate” after the official was reportedly denied entry into the United States ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Artan, who was expected to make history as the first Somali referee at a World Cup, was stopped from entering the US despite holding valid FIFA credentials. The incident has sparked concern within football circles and renewed attention on travel and visa challenges facing officials involved in global tournaments.

Reacting to the development, Infantino said FIFA does not control immigration decisions made by host countries, stressing that such matters remain under government authority. He, however, noted that the situation was regrettable given Artan’s role and the significance of his selection.
