THE Federal Ministry of Aviation and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) have unanimously agreed to take concerted efforts to exterminate corruption in the aviation industry.

This was demonstrated in an inception meeting for stakeholders on Corruption Risk Assessment (CRA) project in the aviation sector held at the NCAA annex training facility in Lagos.

Delivering her keynote address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Aviation, Hajia Binta Bello, said that as part of the overall efforts to engender growth, confidence and transparency in the aviation industry, it is imperative to collaborate with the ICPC to drastically reduce the incidents of corruption in the sector.

She, however, added that this fight was made possible by the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the ministry and the anti-corruption agency in 2014.

Bello, who stated that the collaboration has reduced the activities of touts at the Lagos and Abuja International airports, therefore, urged the ICPC to sustain the tempo of its surveillance activities at the nation’s airports.

In another development, the proposed simulator for the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria to be built in Lagos will be ready in December next year.

NCAT Rector, Captain Samuel Caulcrick, who disclosed this in a chat with aviation correspondents in Akure, Ondo State, said the manufacture of the equipment for the installation of the simulator is 50 per cent completed.

He said the project, to be sited in Lagos because of its location as the centre of aviation, would be changed in future to Abuja.

The Rector noted that citing the simulator in Abuja will work but not for now following the concentration of aviation business in Lagos.

However, the Director-General of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Muhtar Usman, in his remark said the CRA is to examine the procedure, manuals and other documents of the relevant agencies in a view to identifying corruption.

As other chief executives from the aviation parastatals gave their remarks by commending ICPC’s anti-corruption initiative and promised to support the laudable cause, the Chairman of the anti-corruption agency, Mr. Ekpo Nta, called for commitment from all Nigerians to make this anti-corruption drive a huge success.
