The walk, themed ‘Using free and fair elections as a referendum towards evolving a true nation state,’ was organised by Beko Rights Klub, Child Help in Legal Defence of Rights to Education in Nigeria project, Centre for Anti-corruption and Open Leadership and the People’s Action for Democracy.
At Beko’s grave, the convener of Beko Rights Klub (BRK), Comrade Debo Adeniran, who led other activists on the walk, paid glowing tributes to the departed, highlighting some of the good works he did while alive.
Before laying a wreath, Adeniran poured pints of wine and beer on Beko’s grave and lit a stick of cigarette, which was also laid on his tomb. He prayed that the legacies Beko left behind would continue to thrive, especially his humility, which is rapped in his belief that everybody was somebody and everyone was nobody.
On the choice of the theme, Adeniran disclosed that since Nigeria would be going into elections in some days time, it was important to draw the attention of Nigerians to what Beko believes, which is true democracy which is all about free and fair elections.
