A team of neurosurgeons from Sweden, led by Dr. Magnus Tiseil, who brought the facility said to be the only one in the country at present, performed eight successful neurosurgical cases at a highly subsidised rate.
Chief Medical Director of UNTH, Dr. Christopher Amah, said though the hospital was known as centre for thoracic surgery, leading to the resuscitation of open heart surgery at the facility, his administration took it upon itself to revive other areas that account for mortalities among Nigerians.
He said: “A lot of road accidents occur on the highway, and we receive many head injured patients. Some of them get treated. Some result in chronic conditions. We encounter a number of central nervous system diseases such as brain tumours, spinal and brain stem tumours. We have neurosurgeons, including professors, but the challenge had been having the right equipment to deal with some of the complex, deep regions of the brain.”
A neurosurgeon with UNTH, Dr. Enoch Uche, lamented lack of facilities that could aid treatment in government hospitals.
He said the Swedish team’s intervention would help save many Nigerians suffering from various forms of brain diseases.
