NUFBTE dismisses alleged factionalisation, internal crisis

The National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE) has dismissed insinuation that internal crisis was rocking the union. The union also disregarded media reports that the union has been factionalised, saying the claims were outright falsehood.
In the midst of the claim of calmness, the union suspended its General Secretary, Bamidele Busari and National Signing Trustee, Peter Onoja for alleged gross infraction and anti-union conducts.
Addressing a news conference, National President of NUFBTE, Lateef Oyelekan, said anyone talking of factionalisation in the union was expressing mere figment of his unrealistic imagination. 
He cleared the air regarding alleged tenure elongation, disobedient of court order and constitution review as being misquoted by some aggrieved members who angrily left the union.
Oyelekan said the deferment of elections across board for all organs of the union by two years was a meticulous and progressive decision overwhelmingly adopted by the National Executive Council (NEC) at its yearly meeting held in Abuja on February 4, 2019. He alleged that the decision was arrived at as a fallout of the transparent financial report presented by the leadership of the union to the NEC in-session.
He alleged that the motive for the deferment of elections by two years was predicated on the necessity to avoid the unhealthy incidence of animosity, bickering and unnecessary distractions usually associated with the process and conduct of elections.
He alleged that the decision of a two year extension was a collective decision of the union members across the country to the mutual benefit of members, specifically targeted at achieving the building of another monumental hotel project in Ibadan to be constructed, completed and commissioned latest by December 2022.
According to him: “The motion for this vital and highly desirable deferment of elections was moved by the same set of members now clamouring for the discontinuation of the tenure extension implementation.”
On alleged disobedient of court order, he alleged that suspended Busari and Onaja conspired with some misinformed members of the union to sue leadership of the union to National Industrial Court (NIC) with calculated attempt to derail the progressive and patriotic efforts of the union to transform the union through the review of its outdated constitution, and a bid to reinforce the investments of the union.
Oyelekan added: “We were shocked to be inundated with speculations in the media which claimed that our union disobeyed a court order that purportedly restrained our union from holding the concluded conference.
“It is therefore exceedingly expedient to make it abundantly clear that our union was not served with any order of court or injunction as at the day the emergency delegates conference was held.
“Up till this moment, our union is yet to be served with the alleged injunction order from any court of law. “Our members across the country and the general public is advised to discontinuance all speculations and propaganda being peddled around by the suspended officers of the union.”
He maintained that the constitution has been reviewed, establishing a limit of two terms of four years for any elective office to facilitate and ensure peaceful transition. He added that the constitution had been enshrined with proper administration of its investments to protect it from mismanagement and undue mortgage.
