Experts empower children with creative skills

Concerned about empowering 21st-century children with relevant tech and creative skills, FolioTech, in partnership with Kiddies Mirror Initiative, has organised a three-week boot camp aimed at skilling and inspiring children aged between three and 17.

The organisers said the initiative will demonstrate how early exposure to tech and creativity can shape a more empowered future generation.

The training, which was held in Lagos, featured hands-on training in robotics, storytelling, digital art, media production, fashion design, crafts, and public speaking.

Obalolu Okeowo, a FolioTech coding instructor, emphasised the need for early tech education, saying, “By the time many kids reach secondary school, they would have already missed foundational opportunities. We must catch them young.”

Earlier, Director of Studies at FolioTech, Tunde Olayode, highlighted the need for innovative learning beyond the school curriculum.

“We are not just filling time during the holidays; we are filling gaps in the system,” he said, lamenting the lack of access to digital and creative skills in underserved communities.

FolioTech IT mentor, Tunde Obasoft, stressed the importance of building digital competence early.

“Tech skills are the new currency. Teaching kids to build and solve problems with code not only prepares them for future jobs, but it also makes them creators of their futures,” he said.

Programme Manager at Kiddies Mirror, Felicia Owolo, described the initiative as a springboard for lifelong impact.

“When kids learn coding, crafts, and confidence early, they are not just learning skills – they are discovering purpose,” she said.
